Browser Settings After extensive testing, we have found two main browser settings (specifically with Internet Explorer) that can improve performance, enable better logging / tracking and enhance security. The payment system will work just fine with your browsers default settings (if you can read these pages - then a payment will go through fine). However, some clients may prefer extra comfort, so we offer this advice as part of our 'hints and tips'. Please note: these settings are stored on your local machine (by default) and we can not change them through server code at our end. Again, if you want one of these features, but can't quiet work it out, then give us a call and we will give you a hand! AutoComplete By default, the newer versions of Internet Explorer have a feature called AutoComplete - the idea of this is to store frequently typed: web addresses / form fields / usernames and passwords on your local machine - hidden within IE (they are stored in a secure / secret format, and external programs do not have access to them at all). AutoComplete allows you to start typing in a word and a drop down box will appear with previous 'close' selections. We have seen some browser versions (it depends totally on your setup), with AutoComplete turned on, storing credit card numbers when using our site (or indeed any site that requires you to fill in any text in any form). This is not as bad as it first may sound, most people have limited users on a given machine (eg. Mum / dad and occasionally the kids on the home PC) - the information is stored (encrypted) and other external programs can't access this data. On top of that, we also use 'unique' field names on our pages, so you have to actually be on our payment site, starting to put in a valid credit card number (after already doing this once before), before the rest of the card number comes up at all. We have asked a number of our test clients - some of them actually prefer the convenience. However, that said, its your card and your information - so we would like to give you the choice. By default, AutoComplete is normally turned 'on' with a standard IE / Windows install. If you would like to turn it off, then follow these simple steps: - Run Microsoft Internet ExplorerThis will turn this Microsoft 'feature' off for you ;-) Secure Server Proxies As many of you know, proxy servers are used by Internet Servers to store information on a particular website (once its first looked at by one user), in order to speed up performance by delivering a local copy when the next user asks for it (in much the same way as a 'cache' works on your local hard drive). ISPDr (and nearly all Internet Providers) setup clients to use proxy servers as standard - thus speeding up access for all clients on the network (its a LOT faster for pages already visited). By default, Internet Explorer uses a 'lazy' proxy setup, in that it asks for one proxy address and simply maps that to all types of Internet Services it knows about - Web, FTP, Gopher and Secure. ISPDr (and all good payment web sites) use a secure web site - which by definition, must bypass the proxy - creating a direct connection from the Client browser through to the payment website. Most clients of ISPDr are setup to use proxies, and secure proxying is turned on by default. Although the proxy can't actually keep copies of any detailed information, it actually slows down the connection (introduces another bottleneck) and 'hides' some of the vital logging information (that we can use if people try to hack - or when trying to chase down bad payments). To this end, it is recommended to anyone that wants to use this site to turn off Secure Proxies (you can turn off all proxies, but that will slow down normal surfing). To turn of secure proxies (most clients): - Run Microsoft Internet ExplorerAlright, you now have a browser that uses proxies for normal surfing, and goes direct for all secure connections. That's the only tips we have for now, no doubt we will add more as more clients start using the payments site with different software and settings. If you have an interesting tip - then please let us know (a quick email) so that we can share it with everyone! |
